I shot this at Relay for Life during one of the kid activities. This one happened to be during the tug-a-war event. I got some really cool expressions when they hit the water, but their emotions were not as good as this one.

This is our new kitty Harry. We just adopted him 2 days ago, and so far he seems to be a little camera shy. However, I did catch him in mid-meow the other night, and considering that this is the most animated and vocal cat I think I've ever owned, I figured his portrait would fit the "emotion" category nicely. :)

I attempted a quick product shot of this Mountain Dew can. I was going for a darker green, which would have blended the can better with the background. However, the nikon gels don't get that green, so it looks like I need to buy some stronger gels in the future.

Since it was 4th of July, I decided to post a fireworks picture. It's not my best picture of the fireworks, since there is no ambient or foreground (needed 15 second exposure to see it) to add to the frame. I did pass a few other opportunities on other assignments to shot 1/8, but I didn't realize it until after the fact.

My name is Kyle Bruggeman, I'm a Journalism student at the Univ. Neb. - Lincoln. First of all, Clay, thank you for the invite. I will try and keep up with the amazing talent I've seen so far from everyone, but don't expect much. The above photo is from a shooting range in Arapahoe Nebraska. I am currently on a photo documentary project and traveling from town to town. I prefer to shoot with 24-70mm Canon, but anything that captures light is cool with me.

I shot a little bit with Doug Huber at Aurora Co-op in Carleton, NE. Doug was the assistant manager at the Co-op, which provides fertilizer to farmers in the area. After loading up a tank, Doug here washed his hands before taking a bit of a break.

It's not a great image by any means, but It's the best framing shot I got this week.

I am a 24-year-old photographer who lives in Reno, Nev. I graduated from the University of Nevada, Reno in the Spring of 2008 and I have yet to find a full-time job. I was hoping to fine a newspaper job as a photojournalist (what I went to school for), but recently have decided to stop looking in that field momentarily since it's going such a big transition and many papers are closing and have hiring freezes.

This summer I am working on my photography and my business. I am always trying to find cool and exciting ways to show my vision. I'm also trying to get at least a part-time job to help pay some bills and maybe get some new equipment :D. I also plan to do a few location photo shoots with some friends. I've just finished the Reno Rodeo, which kicked off my summer with a bang.

My name is Erik, I am a creative person looking for his outlet of expression while living in Tulsa, OK. Photography has been a pretty consistent source for my needs, though as of late I have lacked inspiration. ISO should prove to be the boost I need to really get back into the swing of things. I really don't have an excuse not to because, like everyone else who's posted so far, I have an abundance of free time(thank you, restaurant industry!).

This Summer I have a couple road trips in the works. To Jersey City to stay at my cousins'. To Austin for ACL. Maybe Colorado. If things work out, which I really hope they do, I want to take a bike to California, up the coast to Canada, back down through Wyoming, to Chicago, and then back on to Tulsa. In between all of that I simply enjoy good beer, and good conversation. Oh, and of course, to share my experiences with all of you is in order.

My life is sort of fragmented right now, and this photo is supposed to represent that feeling.

My name is Clay Lomneth, I am a fourth-year journalism student at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. I have shot for the Reno Gazette-Journal (let's hear it for the Reno-ites), the Daily Nebraskan, the Lincoln Journal Star, various UNL journalism things and a student-run picture agency called Front Page Images.

Right now, I am on a two-month trip across Nebraska, documenting how Nebraskans live during the recession. (see: http://unlphotojournalism.blogspot.com/) This image was shot at a pig farm I photographed for a while.

Being on this trip reminds me what my true love is: Documentary Photojournalism. Not daily newspaper work, though that's great too. It's the spending time with people and hearing stories and showing people images they need to see. That's what I love.

I worked at the Nevada Appeal, a daily paper in Carson City, Nev., for eight wonderful years. Through photojournalism, I've been able to shoot bands like U2, the Cure, Depeche Mode, Santana, Jane's Addiction, and many others. I've shot an Olympic Trials, huge fires, the Reno Rodeo, Burning Man, eight high school graduations and everything in between. One thing that makes my heart rush is hearing my phone ring and see the phone number, 1-111-111-1111. I always believed that getting paid to make images was such a gift, living the dream. I was laid off from the paper about two months ago. Not a shock, our paper cut back to five days a week. I love photojournalism and now am on a different path. I recently applied for the Director of Photography position at Vanderbilt University. Shooting SEC sports would be awesome. Two months ago I met a girl named Amanda. Now, I'm really living a dream because I've finally found the person I've been searching for my entire life. We met in a 36-hour Zen retreat in Carson City, Nev. Twelve 30-minute mediations, several walking meditations, all done in silence, culminated with a 15-minute embrace showered with tears with my soulmate. I found peace and love. Photography is a dream, but seeing yourself reflected in another's soul, is the essence of life.

I guess I'm the first to post to the revived ISO. Not a big surprise, seeing as how my entire summer has been one big vacation free from work and typical adult responsibilities (in other words, I have a lot of free time to take pictures and write). :)

Mini-bio
I'm from Tulsa, OK and a graduate of Oklahoma State University ('07). I have a degree in Psychology and a bit of graduate work completed toward a MA in Counseling. After leaving graduate school (and sadly, my work as a photo editor/staff photographer at the college paper) I worked some crappy jobs at mental health clinics around Stillwater and Tulsa, and finally came to the realization 6 months ago that I needed something new (and better) in my life. Having been fortunate enough to have been able to save up a meager amount of $$$, I quit my job in Tulsa and moved out of my apartment in mid-April. My destination? The western US. I've been driving a lot...Roswell, White Sands National Monument, Las Cruces, Tucson, Flagstaff, Las Vegas, The Hoover Dam, Phoenix, The Grand Canyon, Los Angeles, San Diego & San Francisco are just a few of the stops I've made so far. My life has been so enriched in the last couple of months by the experiences I've had and the wonderful new friends I've made. I've finally made a decision about where I want to be and what I (truly) want to do, and I've never been so happy.

I decided to take a picture of myself reflected in this mirror because my car has been my constant companion through all of this. It has transported me everywhere (and been super-reliable to boot). I didn't bother cleaning the mirror of smudges and dust before snapping this shot because I feel like it's symbolic of what I've come from - a bit of cloudiness and uncertainty in my life has propelled me into doing something so much greater than I could have ever believed was possible. Some of the uncertainty is still present, but I can feel myself improving and growing a little wiser every day.

I look forward to what the rest of the summer has to offer, and I can't wait to see what everyone contributes to ISO!

Los Retratos

For those of you who don't "habla espanol," los retratos is Spanish for (pause) the retratos!

and for those who haven't seen the el nino Chris Farley skit, disregard that whole sentence. Retrato means portrait.

I went to the Mason City Civil War Re-Enactment this weekend and had to produce a 3-5 minutes afterwards. I couldn't work overtime and my video camera had 20 minutes of juice because earlier in the week someone borrowed my charger without mentioning it. So that was fun. To make up for the lack of B-roll I could shoot I decided to shoot lots of portraits and details of the soldiers and then photoshop them to look like they were shot 150 years ago. It has some techincal difficulties and goes on a bit too long, but it's not bad.

Three Young Ladies

This is a photo of Courtney Ned as she performed her dance routine for the Miss Black OSU 2008. She was crowned not long after this performance.

This photo was taken at a Hispanic dance performance. The young lady was wating her turn to dance I just happend to catch her relaxing between the colums. I considered croping closer to her face but felt it was a more complete shot showing her entire costume.

The final young lady is my two year old neice playing with bubbles at the local fair where she got her face painted.

I am currently in the middle of a vacation to the Dominican Republic. These pictures were taken in Higuey and Bavaro Beach respectively. The locals here are mostly very friendly, at least all of the cities surrounding the resorts have these sorts of people. Which is not surprising because tourism provides 75-80% of Dominica's GNP. Several have beamed at the opportunity for me to take their photograph, which makes my hobby much more enjoyable.

July 25-26 were the official days of DiversaFest 2008 in Tulsa, OK. I was lucky enough to get credentials to photograph for the festival itself, seeing as how I am not currently employed at a newspaper and would have otherwise been unable to secure a normal press pass. I was generally happy with my results, even though it was crowded and god-awful hot during the entire festival. The top two pictures are of local bands: The Effects (1) & Callupsie (2). The third picture is of Aaron Behrens of Ghostland Observatory, who put on one of the most amazing live shows I've ever seen (and that's saying a lot since I was at Bonnaroo this year!). Enjoy!

I'm in motion this week as I flit between three cities (St. Louis, Mason City, Omaha) with cars and vans full of all my stuff. Here's a shot from the last feature hunting I did for the Post-Dispatch. I met the Dickson family while driving through mid-town St. Louis. The adults had a loud conversation on the porch steps while the kids jumped rope, did flips and ran races across the yard. They were fun.

The first photo was from Texas Motor speedway where I got the chance to shoot from inside the track. The photo is of Dale Earnhardt Jr. as he enters turn 1.

The second is a family friend water skiing on Fort Gibson lake.

The third is of an iron working demonstration near the OSU campus. They were pouring molten iron into a sand mold.

The final photo is from the OSU campus where a couple of cheerleaders were jumping on a trampoline that was set up on the library lawn.

A self-portrait, a Liz portrait, and a bee portrait. I thought about using shots I had that utilized shadows as the main subject, but ultimately decided on these photos in which the shadows enhance the subject.

With this being my first post I'd like to give thanks to Clay for inviting me to this blog on the sole recommendation of Lizzy, why you'd listen to her, I don't know... ;) Anyways, I hope I'll be able to learn from this ISO experience and look forward to all of the great photos ahead of us.

I'm not sure this qualifies for the shootout. I shot these photos two weeks ago, but the story didn't run until last Friday. I'm not sure what the rules are for the shootout. I didn't have much time to shoot this week as I made an impromtu trip to Mason City, IA to interview for a job, I got it! Then I traveled to Bloomington, IL for my cousin's wedding. So this is the best contest entry you're going to get.

In St. Charles, Mo. a pastor's wife named Pat Merold decided that domestic abuse should not be shoved under the rug anymore. Some clergy have a tendency to tell women to work at being better wives and to avoid divorce because marriage is sacred. Merold and her husband deal with the issue differently. They started the Step Up program which gives battered women and their families a safe place to live and helps them find jobs and cars. It's a great program and the women I met who used their services were so grateful. They are away from the abuse and leading new lives thanks to Pat.

"They show the true meaning of Jesus, that's for sure," says a woman who left her husband years ago after he almost choked her son.

"I just love this place, and I can never repay them," another woman said.

Guest Judge: Liz Margerum

I told her to be as honest as possible, and she pulled through. Long story short, nobody won. If you have a complaint, remember this whole thing is about feedback, and that's what we got. Here's her comments, sent via e-mail to me.

"While there were some really nice images I didn't see one that screamed America. The dog, the park and the fisherman could be anywhere. The cowboy was nice, but there was too much distortion on his head, he looked a little alien. (Watch out for those wide angles! Don't over use them)
The icecream truck didn't quite work. I wanted to see more of the truck and more of the kids. The little girl in the Liberty outfit, almost worked, but she was almost in the middle of the picture and it looked very posed, but not in great way. I liked the old people, but wish the fireworks were better in the background and I also wish they had a flag or something that said America. The park shot looks like a drive-by shoot, go over and work it more. It really had everything, dogs, kids, fire and cars-- all part of the American Dream, but shooting from across the street is little better than paparazzi! Go work it!
The photo of the man with the stars on his head, had too much of the back of one head, and I couldn't tell if they were hugging, or doing something else.
Overall I didn't see one clear winner.

I rarely get a wireless signal in my apartment, so I'm taking the opportunity to post now. I spent my Sunday evening in the park with a camera. It was fun shooting butterflies in the zoo, watching the clouds and then eating burgers and humus with a welcoming Iraqi family and outgoing black man who was a St. Louis native. Fun, random night.

To start off, thanks to everyone who has added images to the shoot off/blog in the past week. I have really enjoyed seeing all the different takes on the category.

To those who have seen this and want in, email either Clay or I and we will be able to hook you up with the ability to post on the blog. We want to get as many people involved as we can.

Going forward, Clay and I would like to see this as something we could expand into something we could have either weekly guest judges or something of the sort so we can have an actual competition going. This goes back to when we had both shot the Avoca Quack Off (mine) (his)

If anyone has someone who would like to judge a week for photos, go ahead and ask them. Also, anyone can post ideas for new topics to shoot.
